Despite OK’s ubiquity, many people don’t know the words behind this two-letter agreement.

OK’s origins are apparently rather comedic.

The English language is chock full of abbreviations. While the words behind many of these shortened forms tend to feel rather obvious (like ft. for feet and VP for vice president), there are plenty of less widely known examples ― even among the common shorthands we use in everyday speech and writing.

Indeed, not everyone will have the answer if you ask what “a.m.” and “p.m.” stand for, or why we use “lb.” to abbreviate a pound. And I recently had the realization that, despite saying and texting it multiple times a day, I had no idea what OK stands for.

We typically use OK or okay to express assent, agreement or acceptance. It can also be an adjective or adverb to suggest something is satisfactory. Over time, it’s even become a verb and noun to indicate approval or authorization. OK now appears in countless languages around the world and was even one of the first sounds uttered on the moon.

Despite the ubiquity of “OK,” my informal polling of friends and colleagues found that not a single one knew the words behind those two letters.

This isn’t terribly surprising. Even etymologists were unsure of the meaning and origin of OK for many years. Some suggested it derived from the Choctaw “okeh,” meaning “it is,” while others pointed to West African origins through the Mande and Wolof languages. Additional theories involved Orrin Kendall, manufacturer of a popular army biscuit that sustained many Union soldiers during the Civil War, or the Haitian port Aux Cayes, which was famous for its rum exports.

Although some debate persists, the most widely accepted explanation among language experts comes from the late etymologist and lexicographer Allen Walker Read. A professor at Columbia University, Read examined the history of “OK” in a series of articles published in American Speech in 1963 and 1964, and concluded that it comes from “oll korrect,” an intentional misspelling of “all correct.”

“He found that Charles Gordon Green of the Boston Morning Post came up with it as a spelling joke shared by newspapers, like an internet meme from an earlier time,” etymologist Barry Popik told HuffPost. ”‘OK’ means ‘all correct.’ That should be ‘AC,’ but it’s a joke.”

Indeed, the first known published appearance of OK with this meaning comes from a piece in the March 23, 1839, issue of The Boston Morning Post, which describes the activities of a satirical organization called the Anti-Bell Ringing Society.

The above is from the Providence Journal, the editor of which is a little too quick on the trigger, on this occasion. We said not a word about our deputation passing “through the city” of Providence. — We said our brethren were going to New York in the Richmond, and they did go, as per Post of Thursday. The “Chairman of the Committee on Charity Lecture Bells,” is one of the deputation, and perhaps if he should return to Boston, via Providence, he of the Journal, and his train-band, would have his “contribution box,” et ceteras, o.k. — all correct — and cause the corks to fly, like sparks, upward.

Subsequent mentions of “O.K. ― all correct” appeared in The Boston Morning Post in the following days and weeks, and the term soon reached other papers like The Baltimore Sun and The Philadelphia Gazette.

This kind of intentional misspelling is reminiscent of more recent linguistic fads, like the use of “kewl” or “kool” instead of “cool,” and common abbreviations like LOL and NSFW.

“We think of intentional misspellings as a modern phenomenon, but I love that period of American history ― the 1830s and ’40s ― because it feels like it was a time when Americans really started having fun with their language and doing things like coming up with creative innovations,” said lexicographer and Wall Street Journal columnist Ben Zimmer. “OK grew out of a kind of abbreviation play that was popular in the U.S. and the U.K. at the time, long before text-speak. It’s funny because it combined two playful trends ― comical misspellings and this fad for making abbreviations for phrases, like NG for ‘no good.’”

Other abbreviations of misspelled words around that time included KY for “know yuse,” to mean “no use,” and KG for “know go,” as in “no-go.”

“Before OK was OW, which was from a misspelled version of ‘all right’ ― ‘oll wright,’” Zimmer added. “That shows up first in The Boston Morning Post and then OK shows up. The editor was having a lot of fun with this.”

We may have politics to thank for propelling OK to new heights, however.

“People at one point assumed it came from Martin Van Buren’s nickname ‘Old Kinderhook’ during the 1840 presidential election,” Zimmer said. “There were buttons that said ‘OK,’ so people assumed that the Van Buren campaign came up with it, but they were just piggybacking on this thing that came from Boston.”

The Democratic incumbent’s supporters even formed “OK Clubs,” some of which had the slogan “OK is OK!” But Van Buren’s Whig Party opponents used OK in a very different way ― to denigrate his predecessor and mentor Andrew Jackson.

A March 1840 issue of The New York Herald either promulgated or originated the rumor that Jackson was illiterate and believed “all correct” was spelled “ole kurrek,” so he wrote OK on official documents to indicate approval. Thus the myth spread, catapulting OK into the national conversation. And, as they say, the rest is history.

The fact that OK has managed to maintain such a hold in our everyday language in the U.S. and far beyond the English-speaking world is impressive, to say the least. The late linguist Allan Metcalf even wrote a book called “OK: The Improbable Story of America’s Greatest Word” and proposed a holiday called “OK Day” on March 23 to celebrate its first known citation on March 23, 1839.

“I agree with Allan Metcalf’s point in his book that it’s an incredibly improbable history ― that this two-word abbreviation coming from some funny little fad in the 1830s could take over the world,” Zimmer said. “It just goes to show that language develops in unexpected ways. The things people find interesting or amusing and want to use can come from all sorts of different sources.”

Zimmer believes looking at examples from the past, like OK, can help us understand the way people innovate with language today through memes and online slang, which still include funny abbreviations. And although we think of the language of the past as formal because we’re used to encountering it through literature and nonfiction texts, we can find more casual and fun writing in places like old comic strips and humorous newspaper columns.

“You can see that there’s this impulse that long predates modern communication and technology,” Zimmer said. “You could just use newspapers back in the day to spread these creative things. That’s fascinating to me. I love the way we can kind of see the playfulness of language through an example like OK. People have the building blocks of language at their disposal and can always come up with something new.”

Nigerian Banks Give Fresh Update on Naira Swap

New Naira Note

Following February 10, 2023 deadline granted by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) for Naira swap, local banks have released updates about terms and conditions upon which the old notes will be exchanged.

Nigerian banks have updated their customers on the maximum allowable sum of N500,000 that can be deposited across the counter, tie to individual biometrics numbers for easy tracking.

There has been confusion about the apex bank’s position over the implementation of the new naira notes policy across the country. Recently, President Muhammadu Buhari announced a decision to allow n200 notes to be used along with new notes up till April 10.

Deposit money banks explained that old N500 and N1000 notes will continue to be for redemption till April 10 also.

Banks said while the old notes can be deposited to any of their branches nationwide before the new deadline set, there is a maximum cap of N500,000 which will be tied to customers’ biometric verification numbers (BVN).

Meanwhile, any customers that plan to deposit up to N500,000 must be registered on CBN’s portal with a link address via crs.cbn.gov.ng. Upon successful completion of the registration process, a code will be generated for the depositor.

Banks said when depositing the old notes within the maximum allowable sum, customers will be required to present the code before the amount will be taken on the counter.

“Customers that want to deposit an amount above N500,000 in the old N500 and N1000 notes will be required to visit the nearest CBN branch to effect the transactions”, local banks said in emails.

Moving toward full implementation of a cashless economy, the apex bank is not willing to shift ground despite calls by politicians and even Supreme Court. Naira Depreciates to N462 at Investors, Exporters FX Window

The CBN remains independent over monetary policy without recourse to Supreme Court in carrying out its functions, MarketForces Africa gathered from experts.

Experts said Supreme Court has no power to alter monetary policy decisions as the apex bank in so far it acts within its capacity as a creation of law. # Nigerian Banks Give Fresh Update on Naira Swap

Rare archaeological find: Complete “Bible of the Dead” found in the desert of Sakkara

Recently, archaeologists announced the discovery of 4 untouched and sealed tombs and a mummy over 4,000 years old in the necropolis of Saqqara near Cairo.

Saqqara, the necropolis of Memphis, the ancient capital of Egypt, is known for the famous pyramid of Pharaoh Djoser and also includes the famous pyramids of Giza.

Among the priceless archaeological finds was a 16-meter-long intact papyrus containing excerpts from the ancient Egyptians’ “Bible of the Dead.”

The papyrus, which is more than 2,000years old, was found in a sarcophagus in a tomb south of the Pyramid of Djoser and is considered a complete “Bible”.

It is the first complete papyrus to be discovered in 100 years and is already being translated into Arabic by scholars.

Scientists consider the discovery important because the hieroglyphs should give them even more insight into the burial customs of ancient Egyptian culture.

The necropolis of Saqqara, a little more than 15 kilometers south of the famous pyramids of Giza, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, as is the Pyramid of Djoser, built around 2,700 BC by the architect Imhotep and considered one of the oldest monuments in the world.

Should you pubilcise your layoff?

With the recent job losses in the tech industry affecting thousands of workers, many people have taken to LinkedIn and other social media to share that they are among those impacted. “Years ago, it was like an act of shame” to publicise your layoff, Albert Ko, the director of sales at AngelList Talent, told CNBC Make It. That’s no longer the case, as it can be a good way to ask for help and “can also be a smart career move.” But you should post something only when you’re mentally ready, he cautioned. Other tips included:

• The post should highlight your accomplishments – your wins and the skills you gained and mastered.
• Be clear about what you want and where you want to go next: Do you have a specific job title in mind? A company you want to work for?
• Tag former managers and coworkers, who can also re-share the post widely and tap their own networks for job leads and connections.

Breaking news: Nnamdi Kanu has sued the Director General of the National continue reading

BREAKING: Nnamdi Kanu Sues National Intelligence Agency Director-General, Ahmed Abubakar Over Treatment In Kenya, Seeks N20Billion Compensation

Kanu filed the suit at the Abia State High Court in Umuahia.

The detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu has sued the Director General of the National Intelligence Agency (NIA), Ahmed Rufai Abubakar over his role in the eight days of his ‘false imprisonment’ in Kenya.

Kanu filed the suit at the Abia State High Court in Umuahia.

Kanu is seeking among others N20 billion in compensation for general and exemplary damages for the violation of his rights.

Kanu’s special counsel, Alloy Ejimakor who filed the suit on Wednesday, November 23, told SaharaReporters that newly discovered evidence implicating Mr. Abubakar beyond the infamous extraordinary rendition prompted the legal action.

Of all the several suits that have emanated from the rendition of Kanu, Ejimakor said “this is the first against Ahmed Abubakar, either in his personal or official capacity.”

In the suit, a copy of which was made available to SaharaReporters, Ejimakor stated that the false imprisonment of the Claimant (Kanu) was without his consent; adding that the Kenyan government has publicly and categorically denied any role in the arrest and imprisonment of the Claimant in Kenya.

He cited the judgement of the Federal High Court of October 26, 2022, in a fundamental rights suit brought by the Claimant against the Federal Republic of Nigeria and others, which had ruled, “I declare that the manner of arrest and detention of the Applicant in Kenya, his continued detention in Abuja, his subjection to physical and mental trauma by the Respondents, the inhuman and degrading treatment meted out to the Applicant amounts to a brazen violation of the Applicant’s fundamental right to dignity of his person and threat to life under Section 34 (1)(a) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended).”

He noted that the “Claimant hereby pleads this Judgment Order and the Judgment and shall rely on same at the trial of this suit. See Annexures 4 and 5.

“By virtue of his public office, the Defendant has a public duty to act in good faith, not to abuse his public office and to ensure that the arrest and imprisonment of the Claimant in Kenya was conducted in accordance with law.

“By falsely arresting and imprisoning the Claimant in Kenya, the Defendant breached his statutory duty requiring him to arrest and/or imprison the Claimant in Kenya only in accordance with law.

“The said false arrest and false imprisonment of the Claimant has been condemned by the United Nations Human Rights Council, which through its Working Group on Arbitrary Detention, rendered a binding Opinion directing Defendant’s employer (the Federal Republic of Nigeria) to release the Claimant unconditionally and accord him the opportunity of seeking compensation/reparations. See Annexure 6, which is hereby pleaded as a document the Claimant shall rely on at the trial of this suit and from which the following material Paragraphs have been culled in seriatim.”

NEWSGoogle sees these scams as the ones to look out for this holiday seasonGoogle says these are the scams most commonly targeting Gmail users.

While many see the holiday season as a time to get together and spread cheer, hackers see it as the perfect time to take advantage of others. That’s why it’s necessary to be prepared and look out for scams during this time of year. To help with that preparation, Google revealed some of the most common scams targeting Gmailusers.

https://g.co/kgs/61ZYYp
  • Gift cards and giveaways: A message may invite the user to purchase a gift card or offer a prize in exchange for credit card information.
  • Charities: It’s not uncommon for malicious actors to pretend to be charitable organizations.
  • Demographic targeting: Some scams will try to use information specific to your life or identity to get you to follow a call to action.
  • Subscription renewals: This could include renewal requests for a variety of things, but the ones that spoof antivirus services are the most troublesome.
  • Crypto scams: These scams will try to collect money from you, usually in the form of a threat, asking for funds to be sent to a crypto wallet.

Scams like these come in many forms, but Google believes these are some of the most prevalent that target Gmail users during the holidays. Of course, if you want to stay safe throughout the year, you should always stay on your toes when it comes to suspicious emails. Whether it’s spelling errors, strange domain addresses, or suspicious attachments, there are usually signs that will warn you that something is not right.

Getting More Views and Traffic

One of the most frequent questions our community members ask us — and themselves — is how to get more people to visit their site. There’s no magic formula, but there are ways to increase your website traffic with a few WordPress.com tools and best practices.

Help Search Engines Find Your Site

If you want your content to be indexed by search engines such as Google and Bing, set your privacy settings to make your site visible to all search engines.

While we take care of a lot of the Search Engine Optimization for you, you can also verify your site through several search engines and platforms, including Google, Bing, and Facebook. Visit Site Verification Services for more.

↑ Table of Contents ↑

Blog Regularly

The internet is full of theories as to how you can raise your post’s visibility in search rankings. None will contest that original, high-quality content with a few well-chosen tags is the best way to get started.

Blogs that have more frequent and regular posting schedules tend to develop an audience quicker.

Blogging isn’t just for hobbyists. Businesses, organizations, and professionals can blog to boost their site’s traffic and get noticed. In fact, blogging regularly is still the single most important thing you can do to increase your site’s SEO (Search Engine Optimization).

People with a plugin-enabled site can also use advanced SEO tools to customize the meta description with a summary that does a better job at captivating readers and potentially increasing the post’s search page ranking.

Even if you have a website with mostly static content, add a “Blog” or “News” section that you regularly update so search engines can see that your site is active. All the SEO strategies in the world won’t help if you’re not adding content, so get to writing!

↑ Table of Contents ↑

Use Keywords on your Site

Make sure your site is well-indexed by search engines by using keywords in your site’s tagline, in your website content, and in tags. Keywords are terms that your target audience might use when searching for your site. To figure out what keywords to include on your site, think about what you would search for if you were trying to find that information. If you sell toys and games to play with toddlers, for example, it would be a good idea to use the term “games for toddlers” in your pages and blog posts.

Be careful about using too many keywords, though! If you repeat the same keywords multiple times, your content will read awkwardly — and worse, search engines like Google will consider that “keyword stuffing,” so doing this can actually hurt your site’s ranking.

↑ Table of Contents ↑

Use Appropriate Tags

Attach appropriate categories and tags to your posts so people can find them in the WordPress.com Reader. But be careful not to use too many tags — fewer than 15 tags (or categories or both) is a good number. The more tags you use, the less likely your post will be featured in the Reader. Read more on tagging.

↑ Table of Contents ↑

Connect to the Community & Spread the Word

Build your traffic in smart ways. SEO and traffic go hand-in-hand: the more people who visit your site, the higher your site will rank in search results. Luckily, WordPress.com is a community in addition to a website-building platform, so we have lots of ways to increase your readership.

↑ Table of Contents ↑

Read and Comment on Other Blogs

Check out Discover to find great blogs and websites on your interests. Then, subscribe to these sites and get to know them a bit. When you read a post that moves you in some way, leave a comment.

↑ Table of Contents ↑

Blogging is all about engaging with others and interacting in online discussions. When you link to a blog post, the blogger will likely find your blog through their stats or a pingback, and come to see what you had to say. They may even subscribe to your site and leave a comment, as we suggested you do above!

↑ Table of Contents ↑

Use auto-sharing to alert your various social networks to your new content. Set it up to automatically share your new blog posts to Twitter, Facebook, or LinkedIn, so your current customers and fans never miss an update.

↑ Table of Contents ↑

Bug Your Real-life Friends

Encourage friends and family to read your blog: send them reminder emails when you update and talk to them about it when you meet in person. Better still, encourage them to sign up for updates using the Subscribe block. Having a small audience of people you care about is better than having a million visitors and not knowing any of them.

↑ Table of Contents ↑

Let People Know About your Posts

If you’ve written a post with someone in mind, drop them a short email with a link to it. This approach works if used very sparingly, maybe once a month per blogger. You don’t want to annoy anyone or seem like a spammer.

↑ Table of Contents ↑

Relax! It Takes Time

Even if you do all of the above, you won’t develop a huge following overnight. Building a sizable audience of engaged and loyal readers takes time. Many of the bloggers you admire have likely been at it for years. Stick with it, and don’t get discouraged by a slow start.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I pay for more traffic?

Paying someone to push more traffic to your site or blog is risky. Unless you’re paying for ad space (like the sponsored options you see on different popular sites and search engines), you may be paying someone to use bots to increase your site traffic. Bots are programs designed to emulate human behavior and artificially increase site traffic. Increased bot traffic can get you penalized in search engines and advertising programs.

What plan do I need to increase traffic to my site?

Different plans will unlock additional tools you can use to optimize your site and drive more traffic to it. For example, with a Premium, Business, or eCommerce plan or a legacy Pro plan, you can re-share content that has previously been posted. The plugin-enabled plans will also give you the ability to use Search Engine Optimization plugins to optimize your pages and posts. But just buying a plan will not guarantee more traffic to your website.

I started working with Chartable to measure my downloads and other information. In order to facilitate this I would like to add this URL prefix to all my enclosure tags:

Please treat it as you would a Podtrac prefix, so that enclosure URLs look like:

Finally, please ensure that the prefix’s scheme (HTTPS vs HTTP) matches the scheme of my episode files (and any other prefixes, if applicable).

Black Sherif information that you didn’t know

Top Select:Black Sherif “Kwaku The Traveller”

Black Sherif’s latest single “Kwaku The Traveller” has become the first song on Boomplay to amass almost one million streams (actual figure is around 930K) in 24 hours, taking his total streams to 8 Million now.

This success adds to the many he is currently chalking since “Kwaku The Traveller” was released on digital streaming sites. The hip hop/drill influenced song is partially autobiographical – the song speaks about his life and the challenges he is surmounting as well as the mistakes he is making. A now famous phrase from the song “Who never fuck up/hands In the air? No hands” carries both a biblical reference and a very relatable feel.

Rapping mostly in pidgin English, Black Sherif weaves a story that furthers the story arc in his two previous releases – First Sermon and Second Sermon. While some fans speculate the message in the song references his recent issue with his “investor” which became public, Black Sherif has dismissed those claims. According to him, the song was recorded months before the issue surfaced.

The success of the song is an indication of his talent, quality of the composition and the relatable lyrics or message in the song. It also points to how beloved he is across all age groups, especially in Ghana.

Topping the Boomplay music chart and other music-related charts in Ghana is not a surprise. His two previous songs – First and Second Sermons have peaked to number on numerous occasions. However, Black Sherif’s single topping the charts in Nigeria is what has surprised many since it’s difficult for a Ghanaian artist to break through the Nigerian music space. Only a few Ghanaian artists have broken through – Gyakie, King Promise, Sarkodie- but they did not dominate charts in Nigeria. What Black Sherif has achieved is therefore unprecedented.

So, what has accounted for the ascent of Black Sherif dominance of “Kwaku The Traveller” in Nigeria? Firstly, having Burna Boy on the remix of “Second Sermon”. Prior to the remix, “Second Sermon” was making waves in Nigeria, among music fans following the Ghanaian scene. Burna Boy featuring on the remix helped push both the song and Black Sherif to a new audience. Going to Nigeria to shoot the video for Second Sermon offered him an opportunity to embark on a promotional tour, including working with such names as Larry Gaaga and Poco Lee thus cementing his newly found influence.

Secondly, EMPIRE Distributions, the label that distributes Black Sherif’s music is investing the requisite marketing resources behind him and the music through various digital promotional activities.

Thirdly, the song is catchy and infectious. Rapping in pidgin means a lot of people in Nigeria understand his message. The message also reflects the realities and ambitions of many people. Lyrics like “I keep on going more like a rolling stone cos I have no stopping time” and “been far away chasing gwalala (money)/I’ll be back again bro, I swear on my life” are messages that any young person trying to make it in life can relate to it.

Black Sherif is making history with “Kwaku The Traveller “, and that is making his fans especially happy. His success is putting Ghana on the map as we say. And dominating charts in Nigeria is not only a win for Ghana but also an inspiration to other artists that they can do the same.

SEO For News: Complete Top Stories Keyword Research Guide
Watch the full video by solidmighty to get started

Making money on every post you share or write

Solidmighty daily news update

Before you click out of this article thinking, “not another keyword research guide,” let me tell you something I’ve learned first-hand from working with national news publishers: Keyword research for publishers is entirely different.

The skills, processes, checklists, and tools you currently use won’t be as helpful in this niche.

null

Forget about presenting your list of keywords to an editorial team using the traditional keyword research method. Those keywords are already outdated!

Also, let me save you hours of time trawling through the thousands, if not millions, of keywords news sites naturally rank for.

SEO for news is different – and so is keyword research.

It’s about winning Top Stories optimization. This will get you the lion’s share of the daily search traffic for a news site.

The purpose of this guide is to equip you with a quick keyword research framework to teach to your journalists so they can win more of those Top Stories spots.

But first…

Why Is Keyword Research For News SEO Different?

Trending Topics

News websites require a different approach to keyword research than other types of websites.

Watch the full video

They typically focus on timely, breaking stories that are often only relevant for a short period.

As a result, news sites need to quickly identify and rank for the keywords being searched for at any given moment (otherwise known as trending topic optimization).

Optimizing for trending topics requires a completely different approach to keyword research.

Traditional keyword research is generally based on 12 months of aggregated data, whereas news keyword research is predominately based on trending topics (which are topics that have not been searched before).

Data

Most local and national news sites cover multiple topics. If a story is of public interest, you can expect a publisher to cover it.

For example, around Christmas, you would expect most news sites to provide tips on festive cooking or buyer guides.

You would also expect these publishers to cover stories that capture the public interest, such as COVID-19.

Outrank Your SERP Rivals for Target Keywords
Semrush’s SEO Content Template tool allows you to build tailored briefs, create relevant content, and outrank SERP rivals for your target keywords.

Try It Free

And just like seasonal events such as Christmas, or worldwide events such as a pandemic, these topics go in and out of the mainstream public interest.

The difference is data; When you are looking at query data for a news site, you have seasonality and trend factors to consider. These factors may also be the reason why your traffic is either up or down.

But there is another factor.

Intent

When a topic is trending or newsworthy, Google gives news sites preference for this query. This is known as “query deserves freshness” (QDF);

“THE QDF solution revolves around determining whether a topic is “hot.” If news sites or blog posts are actively writing about a topic, the model figures that it is one for which users are more likely to want current information.”

null

American got Talent

Google news

null

BBC NEWS

For this reason, news sites can jump in and out of the search engine results page (SERP) for any query.

An easy example to explain this is to compare two U.S. presidents, one past and one present.

If we take the current president, Joe Biden, and compare that to George Bush, the 43rd U.S. president, we can see QDF in action.

For Joe Biden, both Top Stories are triggered at the top of the SERP, and news site topics are listed below.

SERP for Joe Biden

Screenshot from Ahrefs, November 2022

Whereas, if we observe the results for Bush, the SERP is mostly informational.

George Bush informational type search

Screenshot from Ahrefs, November 2022

Notice the lower placement of the top stories, also.

Entities

Keyword patterns for news sites are based on the five Ws of journalism: the who, what, when, where, and why.

Solidmighty music update

They are the fundamental questions that any journalist should ask when covering a story.

  • Who is involved?
  • What happened?
  • When did it happen?
  • Where did it happen?
  • Why did it happen?

Answering these questions in a story generally gives the journalist a good foundation.

To help journalists execute good on-page SEO with their headlines and subheadings, focus on the W’s and less on “keywords” as we know them as SEO pros.

Forget about explaining concepts such as keyword difficulty, monthly search volume, cost per click, or even impressions. Trust me, you will have lost them, and they will go back to ignoring SEO.
